Overdrive Users!!

This message arrived via email this morning: "We are having technical problems that will prevent Overdrive users from logging in to their accounts. We aren’t sure how long it will take to resolve, but are working on it and will keep you posted."  They are ontop of the problem, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you!!

This year I will....

The New Year can be that special time when we can take a step back and reevaluate our life, at least as far back as the previous year and then look ahead to the goals and dreams we hope for in the upcoming months.

What will you be doing this year? Your Oakland Public Library may have just the information you need to help you with your decisions.

If your goal is to spend more time with your family this year we would like to point out several books on games. Do you recall the games you may have played as a child? They can be just as fun today with your own children. Don’t forget to encourage your children to teach you some new games as well. There are trivia, riddles and puzzles to bring fun to the table. While camping, hiking, fishing and hunting are wonderful ways to share the out of doors.

Thinking of getting your finances in order this year? Try authors Suze Orman or Jane Bryant Quinn for some great advice. Pick up the “Complete Idiot’s guide to Wills & Estates” or Deb Knuckey’s “Ms Spent Money Guide” to create your financial plan.

Too much stress?? Relax and get crafty this year. Let your creativity come alive with anything from scrap booking to photography to knitting to jewelry making.  The possibilities are endless!  And the Fine Arts department at the Burt County Fair will be thrilled to have your creations on display!! 

Is your goal to really “get online” this year? Stop in and check out our selection of computer related reference materials in the library. If reading these creates even more questions for you, ask your librarian! She will schedule a time to sit down with you on one of the library computers for some one-on-one assistance!

Snow and more Snow!!

Out with a Rush!

December can fly by with a rush in a normal year...but this one is definately one for the record books.  In terms of weather, the cold and snow kept our storytime attendence sadly to a minimum.  Library attendence in general however seemed less effected.  Fortunately, we all desire a good book or movie no matter what the effort needed to get to the library!! Let us all hope that the New Year brings us bluer skies and calmer winds, with more sun and less snow!

Thanksgiving Crafts!

Everyone should have a childhood memory of tracing your hand with a crayon and creating your very own "Thanksgiving Turkey".  (If you do not have that memory, I strongly suggest you give it a try this year!) 

Our storytime craft this week was incredibly fun!  We each traced our hands in crayon and created some of the most creative and beautiful turkeys ever to grace a Thanksgiving table.

Some years ago I found the following poem:
This isn't just a turkey, as you can plainly see.
I made it with my hand, which is a part of me.
It comes with lots of love, especially to say, I hope you have a very, Happy Thanksgiving Day!"

Crayons, construction paper and imagination make some of the best holiday decorations ever!

Your "Excellent" Library!

The Oakland Public Library has been awarded the “Excellent Accreditation Designation” by the Nebraska Library Commission. There are three different levels of service which a Nebraska library can strive for, Essential, Enhanced and finally, Excellent. Reaching and maintaining service at each level takes time and efforts of library staff and supporters. It has been, and remains to be, the goal of the Oakland Public Library to provide quality service to our library patrons and surrounding community! Thank you to the Nebraska Library Commission for their support and encouragement given to all Nebraska Libraries!
