Fall is almost here and that means...
STORYTIME is back!! Tuesday mornings at 10 for all preschool age children (2-4) who enjoy listening to short stories, coloring, gluing, singing...and getting to know their library!!

SCRAPBOOKING is back as well!  Third Thursday of each month, 6 to 10 pm.  Remember space is very limited so you MUST contact the library to reserve your space!!

Dig into Reading at the Oakland Public Library

Reading is a Family Affair
The Oakland Public Library  Summer Reading Program ... is a fun way to include reading and related activities in summer family time.  It helps children maintain and improve reading skills.	One great way to keep your children reading is to have them join the Dig into Reading Summer Reading Program at the Oakland Public Library during July. Monday 2-4 Activities and guest speakers. Tuesday 10 am Preschool Storytime. Wednesday movie night.
Reading expert Stephen Krashen says:  Children read more when they listen to and discuss books. Reading skills grow by reading. Reading helps improve children’s writing.
During the summer months: Read to young children daily. Read a chapter book to your school-age children by reading aloud one or two chapters every day. Encourage your children to spend time reading and looking at books. Talk with your children about what they are reading. Ask your library about programs for children.

Thanks to funding from the Friends of Oakland Foundation grant, the Oakland Public Library can now offer online services like never before!  With just your library card number and a password, any library patron may access their library account through our online card catalog.  Day or night, you can renew, request, research, recommend or reserve library materials.  Call or stop in the library for a personal tour of the library's online card catalog!

Our tuesday morning storytime featured special guest reader, Stacey Pawling.  Stacey is with the Early Development Network "Babies Can't Wait".  As you will see in the photos, she held the children enthralled with her stories. 

Kindle Tip #1 Returning Books Early

Do you have a book checked out on your Kindle from Overdrive and want to check it back in early? Just log in to your Amazon account and go to “manage your devices”.  There it will list the titles that you have checked out and by going to the right of the title one of your options is “Return”.  It’s as simple as that!! X marks the spot!

X marks the spot! Yes, this year’s summer reading program theme, “One World Many Stories” will include a pirate’s map of the world! The map will keep track of each participant’s “treasures” throughout the month of July! Our “treasures” will be countries visited through our reading. A large world map displayed in the library is ready to be covered with X’s as we keep track of all the countries our readers visit each week.


If you have traveled somewhere in the world and would like to share your experience with our young readers, we would love to hear from you! Do you have items or “treasures” from another country that you would like to display in the library? Can you share another language with us? These are all things that help us learn!

America has long been called the melting pot, a fusion of nationalities, cultures and ethnicities. Becoming more knowledgeable of other countries, as well as our own, through stories, fables, foods, games and information, is our goal for this year’s summer reading program. Traveling the high seas in our pirate ship will allow our map to chart our journey and make our learning fun!

“One World Many Stories” will last from July 5th through 27th. Mondays in July the library will host crafts and activities for 1st grade through 7th grade, from 2 to 4 pm. Tuesdays will be preschool craft and story time from 10 to 11 am. Wednesday evenings the library will host “Movie Night” from 6 to 8 pm. Register your children now!

Summer Reading Program "One World, Many Stories"

This year's Summer Reading Program will be held during the month of July with the following schedule:

Mondays : Craft time from 2 to 4pm

Tuesdays : Preschool Storytime from 10 am to 11 am

Wednesdays : Movie Matinees from 6 to 8 pm

Stop in soon to sign up your child for "One World, Many Stories"  Summer reading is a great way to help preschoolers learn early literacy skills, school age children and teens avoid the "summer slide" and for adults to model the joy of reading to their children.
